It was in 1967 when sheep and beef farmer John Hughes started welcoming campers and carvaners onto Hendwr farm that he farmed in partnership with his brother. The farm was still in the part of North Wales known then as Merioneth (Meirionnydd). It was still the decade of hippies, flower power and the first time round for VW camper vans. Admittedly the swinging 60’s didn’t have a massive impact on the upper Dee valley where farming life still continued very much as it had done for centuries, but opening up the farm to visitors wanting to holiday in this part of the Berwyns brought in new faces to the farm. This has continued to this day nearly 50 years on where John and his family still welcome holiday makers to the park. Over the years they’ve seen the park grow from a few touring campers and caravaners to the lovely community of static caravaning holiday makers, some who are now on the second generation of holiday makers staying on the park today.

We are hoping to organise a few celebratory events in our 50th year but one thing we would love to have help on is a commemorative book. We are asking people who are or were holidaymakers on the park if they have any old photos from their time here – if you have anything you think captures the place we’d love to have a copy and include it in our photographic record of the last 50 years. Here are a few we found of the farm and park drive (we can see John Hughes embracing the 70’s long hair look in a North Wales way (just below the ears!)) and above is Johns father (Cadwalader) sharing tea with the grandchildren, glad to see he kept up standards with a tie. The main picture is a much younger Cadwalader Hughes checking a rams teeth up on the mountain probably back in the 1950’s. If you have anything, we’d love to see them either come and see us next time you’re visiting or you can email us to let us know.
